More efficient housing is needed as the number of students continues to grow throughout Denmark. Big´s project Urban Rigger is an exciting idea dealing with the problem. In this project they use Copenhagen´s harbor, which remains an underutilized and underdeveloped area at the heart of the city. Big introduces a building typology that is optimized for harbor cities, and suggest a solution that allows the students to live in the city. By using the standardized container system a framework for an extremely flexible building topology is established. With 9 container units stacked together in a circle, Urban Rigger creates 15 studio residences with a centralized winter garden used for a common meeting place. The housing is situated on a barge in the canal and can easily be replicated in other harbor cities where affordable housing is needed. Urban Rigger is situated in the canal at the far end of Resfhaleøen near to the beach club and restaurant Halvandet.
