The Icefjord Centre

The Ilulissat city is located in the UNESCO-protected area on the west coast in Greenland. The project will function as a centre were local residents, businesses, climate researches, climate debaters and global tourists will meet in dynamic learning and exhibition space. According to the jury Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter´s proposal won because of its poetic, simple and visionary design, respecting the nature of the UNESCO-protected area. The design is an encompassing framework, partly inside and partly outside that embraces all activities. A wooden framework works as a bridge floating lightly above the rugged landscape offering a spectacular view through the Sermermiut Valley and to the Icefjord. Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter was the only Danish participant in the international competition, which had assembled top architects; Snøhetta (No) Studio Other Spaces v. Olafur Eliasson and Sebastian Behmann (DE), Arkís Architects (IS), Kengo Kuma and Associates (JA), Rintala Eggertsson Architects (NO). The Icefjord Centre is expected to open autumn 2020.
